Sometime when I was home with S on mat leave 2 years ago I happened to catch a movie called “Waitress” with Keri Russell, the actress with the curly hair that I always envied from the tv show “Felicity”. She was a waitress at a local diner who made amazing pies. The scenes in the movie where she makes all those pies mesmerized me. It just seemed so soothing, languid and comforting all at the same time. The motions of combining the ingredients, licking your fingers in the process, combined with the heat of the oven and warm summer breezes through the open window made me never want to return to work again and make pies all day. Mind you I had never attempted at making a pie. Until yesterday.

I had the Friday off and was sans child and was on my way to the local grocery store. I picked up some Niagara peaches and had the urge to make a pie that afternoon as my brother in law and fam were coming over later that night for dinner.

So I came home and began searching for a recipe. Almost an hour and a half later; who knew there were so many damn good food blogs out there, I had found one that seemed easy enough. Here’s the link to the blog and recipe in case anyone’s interested.

Other than midway in the process of boiling the peaches to get the skin off; which was way harder than it should’ve been, I discovered I had no sugar. After a long 15 minutes of debating should I go next door, give up the baking, or run to the store I found some brown sugar. So all was saved. And my pie? Turned out fabulous!! I’ll be attempting more pie making in the future for sure now!!

Breathe in…and breathe out. Repeat.

I’m sitting here at work this Wednesday morning taking deep breaths trying not to focus on last night’s argument. My home seems to be on a permanent cycle of argue, time out, repeat. Angry words were said, mostly by him, a few tears were shed (in private this time) by me and silence for the rest of the night. This is getting very tiring. I am very aware that a good marriage takes work but when one person has lost that loving feeling and no longer feels like doing any of the work (me) how long does it take for one to have the courage to do something about it.

I think we’ve all heard the saying “opposites attract” . My new spin on that is fuck no. Opposites attract in the short term relationship. When there’s lust and sex and butterfly feelings. When two people are past that stage those cute quirks or eccentric views on things are no longer cute or eccentric. They’re annoying and completely out in left field and you’re left wondering why does lust and love and good sex make you blind to what you’re left holding onto after all that is gone.

We are opposites. We acknowledged it tonite actually. He actually said I was strange and completely out to lunch. You want to know why he said I was strange tonite? Tonite’s area on which we differ was the use of antibiotics. Samantha’s been sick since last Thursday with stomatitis. Basically what that is is the cold sore virus multiplied by a 100. High fever for days with sores all over her tongue and very swollen gums. What causes it is a virus. Virus’ cannot be cured by antibiotics. The first clinic we took her to on Saturday told us this. But yesterday Joe felt that that doctor must be wrong because look at all the pain she was in. So we took her to a second doctor who agreed with the first but still prescribed us an antibiotic. So Joe was happy because he got validation in the form of drugs being prescribed. I was adamant not to give them to her. He thinks otherwise. I don’t believe in medication unless you absolutely need it ie; strep throat, or other bacterial infections that require it, or pain relief medication. Funny thing is Sam won’t take it anyway. Getting her to take the Tylenol to lower her fever was a big deal itself. So this is just one area in which we differ and that’s why I’m strange.

Lots of deep breaths are needed around here this week.

First Impressions

I found it so funny when I posted that picture a few days ago of me fishing that a few of you commented and emailed me to say that they would’ve never guessed that I love to fish. Yes people I absolutely love to fish. I don’t mind bugs, other than spiders, or mice, or snakes or any other creature out there. I’d rather be outdoors doing fishing, camping, boating, hiking, than indoors at a mall trying on clothes and make up. Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy a good shopping trip when there are bargains to be found and I do love trying on shoes, but they’re not my favourite thing to do.

I often complain to my husband when he goes on his annual fishing trip or when my other friends go up for their annual hunting trip that I wish I were a guy. I wish I knew women out there who would get a kick out of doing those things too. Instead I get my husband’s sarcastic response of “What you don’t enjoy Tupperware parties?”.

But I wouldn’t trade the way I am for anything. I love being outside. There’s nothing better. I’m hoping Samantha will be like me. I started at an early age with her showing her the beauty of all animals and nature and so far she’s not afraid of much. Despite my mother in law trying to instill her fears onto her I think I’m on the right track.

So if I post a few more fishing pictures of me in the future giggle all you want but that’s the real me!
